Going to Court!

Mrs. Northcutt’s LHS Honors English I class had the opportunity to visit the Hockley County Court House. Judge Pat Phelan talked to the students about the judicial system and the important steps that must be taken for court proceedings. Students were able to ask him thought-provoking questions that they have had since starting their latest literature piece. In English class, these students are reading the drama “12 Angry Men,” by Reginald Rose, which is about a young man who is being charged with the murder of his father. The readers look into the jury room and see the deliberations unfold. This drama deals with themes of prevailing justice, prejudices, and stubbornness. Though this story does have some theatrics, it is a fun way to cross subjects and talk about our justice system. Mrs. Northcutt states, "this is one of my favorite pieces of literature to teach. Students often complain about not learning “real life” lessons. While not everyone can serve on a jury trial, it is an essential lesson for our students to understand the judicial system." Wow, thank you, Mrs. Northcutt, for bringing the story to life!
