An October Funeral

Mrs. Northcutt’s and Mrs. Jones’ English III American Literature class recently concluded their journey through Arthur Miller’s The Crucible with a unique and meaningful event — a funeral for John Proctor. Students stepped into the shoes of characters from the play, delivering heartfelt eulogies from the perspectives of his wife Elizabeth, his children, Reverend Hale, and others, reflecting on Proctor's legacy, the significance of his sacrifice, and the deeper message Miller intended during the era of the Red Scare. They explored how the themes of integrity, reputation, and hysteria in the play mirrored the fear-driven atmosphere of 1950s America — and why John Proctor’s moral stand still resonates today. To close the service, they celebrated like you do with every funeral, they enjoyed punch and cookies — a thoughtful way to reflect on a powerful literary journey together. These LHS students won't be putting this learning "to rest" anytime soon! Thank you Mrs. Northcutt for crafting a fun, memorable lesson! Video
