Art Vessels

LHS students in Mrs. Kristy Kristinek’s Art III and IV classes have been busy exploring the concept of the “vessel” (a hollow form such as a bowl, pitcher, or pot traditionally used to hold something). Using air-dry clay, students were challenged to design and sculpt their own interpretations of vessels, experimenting with both form and surface. Once complete, the pieces can be painted and altered to reflect each artist’s individual style. This two-part project pushes students to think conceptually as well as technically:
1) Create a Vessel of Light (a piece designed to “hold light,” created by cutting out shapes and exploring positive and negative space through removed clay).
and 2) Create a Vessel that Holds Something (a more traditional form built through additive techniques, designed to contain a chosen object or idea). Mrs. Kristinek’s challenge encourages students to blend craftsmanship, creativity, and conceptual thinking by transforming simple clay into meaningful works of art. Thank you Mrs. Kristinek, for challenging students to find their most creative self!
